Drove the long ride from Cleveland to Naperville today, six hours and fifteen minutes from door to door.  Near Toledo on I80, the sun broke through, warming me and painting the harvested fields, long past green and now a fading golden brown.  Even so, I pass a field of pumpkins, rotting unpicked, and corn in the fields, waiting like a broken promise.

I cruise along, my car almost knows the way. I remind it gently, move over here, a little faster there, both of us machines unthinking.  It comes to me, I am afraid.

I once read a bullfighter say, “I am not afraid of death, I fear life”. My father and grandfather faced death in war, but not I.  Perhaps this is my test.   I continue my drive, 74 miles per hour and think, tomorrow is another day.
