safe depositPosted: March 11, 2013
We dug through our safe box, pulling certificates and documents turning over proof that society membership requires. Actions that say to a child, “Take possession, your life is your own to live”, but of course I add “And don’t lose the papers.”
As we searched our box, we rediscovered a stash of savings bonds for each child. Every birthday and holiday my father would gift both children with a small US Savings Bond and over the years both child and bond matured. It makes me smile that Dad, who never saved a dime in his life, who sometimes gambled away his paycheck the day he got it, set aside money that over the years turned to fine gifts for the two girls.
Dad once told me when the girls were infants, “Make sure the girls spend this money on a lark”, and now that is their choice to make.
To me, it speaks of the power of small steps over time.
May you grow in small steady steps.
