iowa, planking, cycling, rootbeer and chicken livers

Iowa was so friendly, and the Wabash Trace so nice that it needs a second post. In Shenandoah at the restaurant called the Depot – you can get a locally crafted root-beer. Rich and smooth with just a hint of anise it was a treat.

We stopped at several other nice restaurants, but I couldn’t find one that sourced local Iowa beef, maybe that’s something to find in nearby Omaha which is a larger city, but when I asked the waitress what they recommended everyone said “Onion Rings” and “Chicken Livers”.

I have to admit that all my life I’ve never tried a chicken liver, though my mother a farm girl loved them. So to honor Mom’s memory we tried the chicken livers and they were very tasty.

Maybe this is Iowa foie gras? It was pretty good but very rich.

So, if we’re going to enjoy the table – we’d better do some extra along the trail…

I enjoyed your travelogue and everyone’s planking pose! And I like that you call your daughters “favorite”…whether younger or older…sweet. My father always referred to me as his “eldest” daughter…and I was.

    Those onion rings look amazing

Tried rootbeer in Tooele UT long time ago. Here in scandinavia we can sometimes find the imported canned type in supermarkets, but it is a very superficial beverage with strange chemicals. I really must go to Iowa to try that genuine homemade rootbeer!

I was doing planks this morning. I’m still aching. Still, I feel smugly healthy, which is the important thing. Loved your pictures; those onion rings were enormous.

cool! My youngest daughter, of the six-pack abs, convinced us all to plank every day for 30 seconds and then do 10 pushups. It’s like the kick-start for a more active day, and if we don’t do anything we still have the habit of the plank πŸ™‚

Nice planking! Is America the home of root beer?

    • billgncs says:

It was invented here, originally as a tea from a blend of herbs and roots. Later they served it with carbonated water and Voila ( did I mean wala ) – so it goes right back to Philadelphia and the independence movement

I like it because there are many small places that make their own, giving it a local flavor – it isn’t completely dominated by the mass producers.

Glad you enjoyed Iowa’s hospitality…i’ve never tried chicken livers but we’ve grilled plenty of home-raised steak. Root beer simply must be served in a frosty mug!

Very yoga like in that last shot. Namaste.
