What makes a almost perfect day ? Start with a 25 mile bike ride along the DuPage River with your favorite oldest daughter ( favorite youngest is off to France and Kenya ) return for a shower and a spot of a nap then head over to a little Mexican place for an avocado margarita.
A friend has recommended Bien Trucha for its drinks and I was expecting a typical Mexican fare. Our first warning was the line at 5:00 to get in. We were in no hurry, and they entered us in on their Ipad and told us they would text us in about fourty five minutes. People after us were waiting over two hours for a spot in this little forty seat restaurant. Off we went to window shop at the stores in the town.
Just as expected, our text arrived and we were seated in the tight but conformable quarters. It’s loud and full of bustling servers who pay constant attention to your every need. No ordinary Mexican fare, I wouldn’t call it fusion, but it was close… we ordered tapas style and let the waitress and cook space out our food… but first avocado margaritas… I didn’t know what to expect, but they were smooth and wonderful!
We had the guacamole of the day, with watermelon cubes mixed throughout. It was zesty and each time you hit a little watermelon cube it bust of sweetness… wonderful
Then our courses arrived — steak tacos with sauces on top ( outstanding ), cheesy rice and corn — I swear cheesy rice stands toe to toe against risotto as the best way to serve rice, and the corn was addictive, daughter and dad eyed each other for the last bite…
Then tilipia tacos with coleslaw, fresh breaded fish – and then prawn tacos with an assortment of mayo. These reminded me of sushi.
We left so surprised ( this not your normal Mexican ) and satisfied with our discovery of a culinary treasure.
Almost perfect day? Well don’t forget the sunscreen on a long bike ride…
I discovered tapas ( those delightful Spanish appetizers ) by accident. I happened to park in front a restaurant in Naperville, IL that served them, and strolled in to try one. I have been a fan ever since. Designed as finger food, tapas are best shared with friends, where you can each savor the variety of different tastes where each bite is accented with cheese or a sauce to help bring out the maximum flavor.
